What statutory health insurance really pays towards an implant

German statutory health insurance pays a fixed subsidy towards dental restorations. It is calculated from the standard care defined for the particular findings – not from what you actually have done.

The basic subsidy is 60 per cent of the standard care. With an unbroken record in the bonus booklet it rises to 70 per cent after five years and 75 per cent after ten. Adults need one check-up per calendar year for this, children and adolescents two. A single missing year resets the bonus.

For an implant that means you receive the subsidy allotted to the standard care for those findings – a bridge, for example. You bear the difference to the implant yourself. It is therefore worth studying the treatment and cost plan before you sign.

The amounts are adjusted annually by the Federal Joint Committee.
