Implants despite osteoporosis medication: guideline updated

Anyone taking bisphosphonates or other antiresorptive bone medication because of osteoporosis or cancer faces a raised risk of a rare but serious complication in the jawbone. Implants have therefore been approached with caution.

The revised S3 guideline, led by the DGI and DGZMK, largely confirms the existing recommendations and advises a differentiated assessment of risk rather than a blanket refusal.

What matters are the drug, the dose, how long it has been taken and why: the situation in osteoporosis therapy differs markedly from that in high-dose cancer treatment.

Important for those affected: bring a complete list of your medication. And never stop a medicine on your own initiative before a procedure – that is a decision to be taken together with the doctors treating you.
