CT — computed tomography for dental implants

Computed tomography (CT) added a further, more precise imaging technique to the field.

With the development of computed tomography (CT), a further and more precise imaging technique is now available. Computed tomography is an imaging method in which a computer-based analysis combines a large number of individual digital X-ray images into a realistic picture.

A CT scan is made when an X-ray does not provide the required information about the bone situation. Highly developed scanners and CT images then make it possible to measure the bone available and to analyse bone quality through density measurements. They allow anatomical structures to be shown spatially, without distortion and to exact scale, reproducing the smallest details. The position and course of the finest structures, such as nerves, can be traced with spatial precision.

A great advantage are the cross-sectional images a tomogram provides. On these sections the height and width of the bone can be measured directly. Combining the sections produces a three-dimensional image. This three-dimensional picture of the jaw allows a very accurate diagnosis and precise planning of the implant placement.
