Active surfaces were developed to optimise early implant stability and are intended to increase safety during the critical healing period. Optimising the implant surface at molecular level is also expected to shorten the average healing time.
Conventional titanium surfaces are hydrophobic and repel liquids. An active implant surface is highly reactive and markedly hydrophilic. As a result it rapidly attracts blood and proteins and is intended to promote bone formation around the implant. Early bone-to-implant contact across the whole surface should be considerably increased, and healing and osseointegration accelerated.
